The trouble is that caffeine, even in small doses, blocks sleep neurotransmitters – which are the calming chemicals your body produces to make you sleepy. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant with effects that can last up to 7 hours. Plus, for people who have liver problems or who are taking oral contraceptives or other medications, the effects of caffeine can last even longer! It interferes with the body’s natural regulatory rhythms and chronic use of it can leave one perpetually out of balance — and regularly struggling for sleep.
Here at Teahouse Emporium we have a huge variety of non-caffeinated teas that can help wean you off reliance on caffeine and consequently help you to get a good night’s sleep.
Rooibos teas (especially green rooibos) help calm the nervous system, thus aiding a restful sleep. Then we have our herbal tea blends such as Evening Herbal Tea and Sleepy Tea. These are perfect to drink in the evening when you crave the comfort of a nice, warm cup of tea or coffee – and they taste great too! We also stock loose leaf decaff Earl Grey and English Breakfast teas for those that just can’t live without their regular cup of tea, but need an alternative to stop those sleepless nights.
In our coffee range we have 2 decaff coffees, Costa Rican SHB decaff and Brizillian Santos decaff. The Costa Rican decaff is medium strength , slightly cocoa in flavour with a sweet fruity finish. The Brazilian Santos decaff is rich and strong. Both decaff coffees are decaffeinated using the Swiss water method, where no chemicals are added to the coffee beans in the process of extracting the caffeine – just water! By doing it this way, you don’t get any unwanted chemicals in your coffee, and you can create a decaff coffee without losing out on much of the flavour.
Decaff coffee is often thought of as being an unpleasant alternative to regular coffee, and is one of the main queries we hear from people who are hesitant to try it. It’s definitely worth trying them out to see how you get on – we promise they still taste good!
Kicking the caffeine habit can be incredibly difficult, especially when you’re used to fuelling yourself with numerous cups of tea or coffee to help you get through the day. It’s well worth the effort, though – your sleep will be longer and of higher quality, and your overall health should improve.
